Had a nice laugh reading Prem Panicker's match report on Day four of the Second Test. I like the way he writes, and not just about cricket. He had prepared a report on the Kumbh mela, which also made interesting reading.
She's all that and more, sure. She's also one of the few columnists I know who have the balls (okay, okay!) to hold strong opinions on anything and what's more be consistent about them. And she's data driven unlike most others who merely drivel.
Most bigots have strong opinions and are consistently bigoted. I've read enough of her articles over the years to form my strong opinion about her, thank you very much. Hey, maybe I'm bigoted too ! :-)
The problem with Varsha Bhosle is that while she makes sense many a time, she buries her arguments in so much bile and bitching that it just sounds like she's got something stuck up her ass. People end up concentrating on her style than her "data" (?!?)
Think of it this way: if I tried to point out that you had bad breath (for example) and kept abusing you for it, do you think you'd be in a mood to listen?
An example: she spoke out against "vegetarian nazis" - a view I mostly agree with - but then wrote crap like "Someday, some loony-tunes may give in and I'll be stuck with, yuck, only bhindis and karelas!" (see article at: http://www.rediff.com/news/1998/apr/16varsha.htm )
I often agree with her views, but I think she's a lousy writer.
There's nothing wrong with writing opinionated articles. Heck, I do it all the time. You just have to express your opinions in a manner that won't piss off your readers and alienate them. And she hasn't learnt it yet.
Yeah, I used to work with him and he's an awful grouch really but he makes for very nice reading so all is forgiven.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you're into that kind of thing, Varsha Bhosle (on rediff as well) is hugely entertaining.
Varsha Bhosle !!!! Sorry, cant stand her at all. Prejudiced, biased, bigoted...dont get me started... ;-)

ReplyDeletePlus, she writes about sex sometimes :)

ReplyDeleteI kinda liked Varsha Bhosle's last two articles. Maybe we're all tri-goted?

You wouldn't be a communist by any chance, would you? ;)
