From Mostly Harmless

"A robot was programmed to believe that it liked herring sandwiches. This was actually the most difficult part of the whole experiment. Once the robot had been programmed to believe that it liked herring sandwiches, a herring sandwich was placed in front of it. Where upon the robot thought to itself, Ah! A herring sandwich! I like herring sandwiches.

"It would then bend over and scoop up the herring sandwich in its herring sandwich scoop, and then straighten up again. Unfortunately for the robot, it was fashioned in such a way that the action of straightening up caused the herring sandwich to slip straight back off its herring sandwich scoop and fall on to the floor in front of the robot. Whereupon the robot thought to itself, Ah! A herring sandwich...etc., and repeated the same action over and over again. The only thing that prevented the herring sandwich from getting bored with the whole damn business and crawling off in search of other ways of passing the time was that the herring sandwich, being just a bit of dead fish between a couple of slices of bread, was marginally less alert to what was going on than was the robot."

I think its time for me to re-read the trilogy in 5 parts.

Kaante

Kaante is not all that bad. The pace doesnt falter, the dialogues are funny at times, the ending is rather unique for a Hindi movie and the performances are quite decent. If you take away the songs and the mandatory emotional scenes, you are left with a fairly good copy of Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects. I think I would have liked the movie if I hadn't seen the originals.

Conversation snippet

Me: "Hey, look at this ad for a CD from Times Music - 'Let Amitabh Bachchan speak to your unborn !' Mantras and stuff to listen to when you are pregnant. Should we buy this ?"

She: "Yeah, right. See how Abhishek Bachchan turned out"

Annoyances

Damn ! Puggy is down and I can't check my mail...not through my email client anyway.

I need to remove myself from . Too much noise, too many spoilers, very little info on books I haven't heard of.

Wishlist

  1. India beat Australia to a pulp in Australia. Sehwag and Tendulkar hammer the hell out of McGrath, Warne, Lee and co, in front of their adoring public

  2. Hollywood DVDs not sold/rented to Bollywood directors and script writers

  3. Sudden drop in sales of remixed songs force Indian music directors to compose their own tunes

  4. Amitabh Bachchan shaves

  5. The telecom industry develops one instrument for unlimited mobility, unlimited (and free) incoming calls with zero connectivity problems

And so on, so forth...

Nair the Great

I'm doing so well at the stock market now, its scary. There has to be a downturn - the next stock I pick has to be a loser.

I'm postponing investing till I get over this feeling. Brrr...

Viva Live Journal !

Is it just me or do others also think that most of the Indian blogs on blogspot are full of pretentious twaddle ? Hmph !

Yes, I am bored !

Restricted Holiday

Today is a restricted holiday at office. Which means that you can take the day off provided you work on Dec 26 instead. Since no one here has enough visibility to see if they - or the company - will be around in December, most of my team members have decided not to come to work today. I don't know if this tells me something.

Donnie Darko

Interesting movie. I didn't understand half of it, hence the word 'interesting'.

The movie is about this boy Donnie who is another of those highly intelligent movie kids with behavioral disorders. He keeps seeing a giant rabbit who urges him to do cool stuff like defacing the school rest room, setting fire to public places and the like (we are not talking Bugs Bunny here). He is also introduced to the space time continuum due to which he gets killed in the end, which is really the beginning of the movie due to the space time thingy. As a result, he prevents his girl friend from being killed, kinda like Superman in the first Superman movie. Only that Donnie doesnt wear tights and can't fly.

The rabbit doesnt get it in the end. Neither did I.

Q&A

Will I stop having fun ?
Will I lose too much sleep ?
Can I feel irresponsible again ?
Can I go on vacation to far off places as before ?
Do I have the money ?
Can I play the violin again ?

A hundred and one questions.

Anxious. Expectant. Confused. Happy.

Sindha and I are expecting our kid to appear in another six months.

Hats Off !

One of the best cricketers I have seen. Without doubt, the one man you would pick to bat for your life.

Congrats, Steve Waugh !
