I was listening to Jadoo Teri Nazar on Radio City the other day, while driving to work. Got me thinking about opening notes - this song had one of the best "openings" I've ever heard (for lack of a better word) . A few others I could think of:
- Pehla Nasha
- Meri Sapnon Ki Rani
- Sweet Child of Mine
I'm not counting the likes of Chaiyya Chaiyya and Money for Nothing - the opening notes are famous because of the song, they don't stand by themselves really. IMO, anyway.
So also, the short opening note of REM's Losing my religion.
ReplyDeleteFrom my westernmusic-opic(as in myopic) vision, here are some opening notes you might want to check out, if not already:).
ReplyDelete1. Gary Moore - "Still Got the Blues For you"
(a wonderful blues riff opening note n the electric guitar)
2. Deep Purple - "Smoke on the Water"
(no descriptions needed - bas naam hi kaafi hai!)
3.The Great White - "Save Your love"
(predominantly rock balladish - but wonderful opening note)
4.Pink Floyd - "Coming Back to Life"
(terribly underrated, especially by core Floyd/Waters worshippers, but a beautiful song!)
5. Bob Dylan - "Like a Rolling Stone"
(that piano is nice when it starts..)
I'd have had a bunch of Zep tunes in there, if not for serious concerns about my personal safety:)..enjoy!
Heh. Just heard the Gary Moore song yesterday. Yeah, it's quite good.
ReplyDeleteSmoke on the Water - of course.
Great White - haven't heard this, will keep a lookout.
Coming Back to Life - yeah, this is good too. I lean towards Waters, but I'm not a hard core fan or anything.
Dylan - yeah, the piano is nice.
Thanks for the list. What are the Zepp ones?
Hmm. Can't remember the opening notes. Thanks, though.
ReplyDelete:)..a few Zep ones I think have great opening notes..
ReplyDelete"When the Levee Breaks" - the drums were setup to have the echoing effect, then there's the harmonica and the guitar that combine to produce an almost surreal beginning with lots of blues touches. Not everyone likes this song, but then it grew on me much like Rahman tunes:).
"Over the Hills and Far Away" - simple acoustic guitar note, I find it quite soothing. Would not really rank as a great opening note, nice though.
"In my time of Dying" - unconventional song, but there's this totally different guitar beginning to the song. More like Jimmy Page is sliding up and down the guitar. Again, no two Zep tunes ever sound similar, but the beginning is quite nice here.
Some songs I thought had decent opening notes (even before the song became famous) and we might have missed out.
Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Bon Jovi "Living on a Prayer"
U2 "Mysterious Ways" (the opening notes actually made the song famous I think:) )
Still got the blues is ace.
ReplyDeleteHearing someone you love play and sing that for you after a fight is even better.... :)

ReplyDeletesome of us are getting there:),not yet:)

ReplyDeleteI think it'll be worth getting there. My hubby and his band used to do that very well. And he still picks up the guitar and plays it for me sometimes - says he likes the way I react to the song. I do too. :)
something about the guitar and being able to play it :).I'll take your word it's worth getting there:)
ReplyDeleteEdge of darkness - Eric Clapton, Michael Kamen
ReplyDeleteDaphne and Chloe - Ravel
N.I.B - Black Sabbath
Spiral Architect - Black Sabbath
The Imperial March (From "The Empire Strikes Back") - John Williams
Take Five - Dave Brubeck Trio (The Carmen McRae vocal version comes a close second)
Thanks. Nice list. I don't think I've heard any apart from perhaps the John Williams one.
ReplyDeleteAlways glad to share. Next time there's an LJ meet, i'll bring my music and movie collection. It's swap time!
ReplyDeleteBah. That's by ripoff king Annu Malik. So chances are its ripped off from a much more famous track anyway.
ReplyDeleteGot to find the original if you are going to rank it among your all time favorites.
Er..which is by ripoff king Anu Malik?
