Disappointed in the New Year

The Manticore's Secret, Samit Basu's sequel to The Simoqin Prophecies, sucks. Meandering plot, too many characters and too many Pratchett plot devices. The first book had a large dose of Pratchett too, but at least the plot was well-knit and the humour shone right through.

Not a good start to 2006.

  1. Oh noes! I bought it yeterday with a mind to read Simoqin first (to brush up on everything), and then read this.

  2. Oh, please do read Simoqin. And what the hell, read this one too. I'm hoping the third part will make up for the second, as is the case with most trilogies.

  3. Ah, but I've already read Simoqin, just wanted to brush up on the various Khudrans and Vamans and such. Now that I have boiught it, I am going to read the second one too, and see what happens in the third.

  4. I was rather looking forward to to part II, but as you rightly say, most part II's suck.
