Almost Perfect - the movies

10 English movies which I have seen and believe are very close to perfection, or movie nirvana:

1. Casablanca
2. Some Like it Hot
3. The Godfather
4. Raging Bull
5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
6. Pulp Fiction
7. Singing in the Rain
8. Psycho
9. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
10. When Harry Met Sally

I need to see many more Indian movies before I can come up with such a list. The top 3 I can think of right now are:

1. Sholay
2. Manichitrathazhu
3. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron

  1. Manichitrathazhu was really good. I liked Paithrukam a lot as well. It is in that genre, thereabouts..

  2. These are the only two I can think of now... but, dont Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption make your list? If the ones you have listed are better than them, I need to catch some movies!

  3. I considered Shawshank. It would definitely figure in my top 20. Fight Club - yes, it is a good movie. However I don't really think its in this league. IMHO, of course ;-)

  6. What, no Rocky!!!! Haven't seen Raging Bull, but Rocky's simply got to be on that list!!!

Others on my list would include

Usual Suspects, Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, As good as it gets, French kiss(Gosh, I think one of my all time fav scenes is Meg Ryan sniffing at those bottles of wine in Kevin Kline's home, almost transported me to Champagne :-)), and Titanic.

    Hindi
Jaane Bhi do yaaron - simply the best

One of my favs is choti si baat. I mean, consider Hrishikesh Mukherjee's gall - Asrani as the epitome of style!!!

  8. I know this might seem out of place, but The Matrix is one movie that has got to be on my list.
Psycho, i feel is a little over-rated. Check out Citizen Kane. The vcd has just come out in the market...

Indian movies: Anand. Golmaal. Lagaan. (Feel-good movie, but I like it) Any Ramgopal Verma flick. :-)

  11. I've seen Kane. I did like it, but I wouldn't put it in my top 10, thanks. ;-)

  14. Madhav, none of those first ten movies were made in England. ;) There are some great movies made in English outside the US, but I suspect they might not be as widely distributed as the Hollywood stuff.

  15. Oh, English=the language english, not necessarily those made in England. Sorry ;-)

And yes, I have seen a few great movies in English made outside the US. Just that they didn't make it to my list.
