Why, dammit, why ? Why is everything these days a copy ? Look at
this now - a remake of Run Lola, Run, for crying out loud ! Why do we keep churning out these imitations ? Its only in India that a movie called
Ssshhh... could turn out to be a remake of a movie called Scream ! Sheesh !
It is not imitation, they call it "inspiration"
ReplyDelete;)
We've been doing it for more than half a century; why go against tradition and heritage just now?
ReplyDeletebah, us purists have nothing going for us at all!
ReplyDeleteYour userpic looks angryy :D
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I saw Ek din.. last night.. Pick one of these,
ReplyDeleteLousy,
Pathetic,
Horrible...
BTW, beatzo got divx rip of Run lola run from IIMC. Now, finally, I can see the original. Yeah, I know that it is being telecasted in ZMGM, but I dont have a cable connection :-(
I heard an interview where the lead actress (Kajol's sister Tanisha??) said: It isn't "Ssshhh", it's "Ssshhhh". Heheh.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did see Run Lola, Run. 'Kinetic' is really the word to describe it !
ReplyDeleteWith a name like 'Bollywood', do you expect anything original?
ReplyDeleteReproductions are not all bad. Often they make it palatable to the cultural context, in this case, the Indian one. Sometimes, they even improve on the original (I may be alone, but I happen to believe that both Sabrina and Psycho are better new) or at the very least make it suit the temporal context.
ReplyDeleteI liked the movie Run Lola Run enough that I would see it once in every version. It's even interesting to see different version. Subtitled stuff is not as good. For one thing, it's a pain to not get the full effect of the movie when the words are not syncing or the image doesn't match the language and the cultural context it implies. For this reason I prefer a completely new "re" make, rather than just a dubbing. The MOST popular version of Bombay Boys (which was originally made in English, mind you), is actually a Hindi version of it, with English subtitled. It's so frustrating to see lips moving in English, forming the words that are in the subtitles, but what you hear instead, is Hindi. Arghck!
For this reason I also HATE the Hindi versions of A.R. Rahman songs that were originally in Tamizh. The rhythmic and musical quality of the Hindi words never fit right, and unfortunately, it becomes PURPORTEDLY the more popular version (a rant on Hindi being the purportedly more popular thing another day) and that's all anyone hears after that. A poor dubbing, a pathetic 'version' of the real thing. I'd rather they just remake the whole song with the same meaning or something.
I understand the frustrating of losing the original, especially when the remake doesn't improve on it, but the "improvement" is usually a debatable thing anyway.

ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Sholay is my favorite example. Another would be Gulzar's Angoor, which was based on A Comedy of Errors

Hmm. I haven't seen the original Sabrina, so can't really comment on that. I don't agree about Pyscho, but maybe I was prejudiced when I watched the new version. I watched it with a sneer, saying "Ha, lets see you top Hitchcock !" It had to fail ! ;-).

Ditto !
Perhaps because all the truly creative and talented people in the world get discouraged when all their shit gets pirated, and quit the business.
ReplyDeletePossible, but hopefully not all of them will.
