Think that's coz' his writing has been so copied and developed that it has become mainstream, and doesn't have the impact it once had when an aphorism in every box made for exhilerating reading..
Guess its a matter of preference. I read Neverwhere as an afterthought to 'The Golden Compass' series and 'A wrinkle in Time'. Maybe it was a phase; maybe it wouldn't appeal as much now...
PS: While Sandman is available in plenty at 2nd hand bookshops here, the novels are hard to come by.
Golly, where do you live then?I have found Neverwhere, Anasi boys, and American Gods in the neighbourhood bookshop but have to get Sandman comics from out of the country. So, I have only read 3 volumes so far...which is a pity really.
I loved _His Dark Materials_ and expect I will feel the same the next time I read it. Haven't read much else by Pullman though - only the _Fire-Maker's Daughter_, and that too because I read it out to my daughter last year. I read _A Wrinkle in Time_ last week, and then its sequel _A Wind in the Door_. I have two more L'Engles books waiting to be read. :)
Have you read _V for Vendetta_ and _Watchmen_, and if yes, what did you think of them?
Ask him to checkout Landmark at the Forum mall. Also Blossom on Church Street. I think they cost around Rs 650 first hand. Blossom would have it a bit cheaper.
Again, Beatzo might be able to give you more info. He's da man when it comes to gai man.
I'm not much of a fan, but I do own Stardust and tho' the story is a little drawn out in the middle.. it does have its moments of brilliance. Was planning to pick up a couple of other gaiman's.. but this post (and its comments) sure have me thinking twice.. books are not *that* cheap here... or maybe i just dont know where to go! :-(
I am in Bangalore. Blossom had many of the Sandman books, but none of the books. Where did you find them?
I was also reading Eva Ibbottson, which I am sure your daughter will love being read out. If you haven't read them already, try 'Secret of Platform 13', 'Which Witch', 'Island of the Aunts' etc.
L'Engle also petered out after a while.
Haven't read V for Vendetta or Watchmen. On the whole I think I probably am not much of a graphic novel guy...
>Couldn't it have been a more interesting entity, like cthulu?
No. The cookie monster's diet is more suited to the world wide web. Cthulhu...let's just say the shrieks-and-torture model isn't quite appropriate for modern times. It is the ancient city of R'lyeh, after all.
I found the Gaiman books in the Om bookshop in Gurgaon. They sometimes have a decent stock of fantasy, at least I have seen Covenant's latest series there but nothing of Simmons'. I'll try out Ibbottson, thanks for the recommendation. :)
Who is he?
ReplyDeleteYou are just too old now!
ReplyDeleteAnd wise.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you for Sandman, but Neverwhere and Stardust were simply awesome.
ReplyDeleteWriter. Popular among the geek crowd. Not bad, but overrated, IM-not-so-H-O.
ReplyDeleteI confess I haven't read them, so you could be right. I'm basing this just on Sandman, American Gods and Anansi Boys.
ReplyDeleteWhat ate my quote tags and my icon? o_o
ReplyDeleteThe cookie monster.

Ah, okie.. Haven't read any of his works, so I will take your word.
ReplyDeleteActually, have heard of him, courtesy beatzo and jace's posts, but that's about all I know!
One of these days, you'll say that beatzo is overrated ;)
ReplyDeleteI quite like Sandman. I don't care much about the novels.

Sandman comics are available at most bookstores in Bangalore. I also have the entire set in a soft copy, thanks to yon Beatzo.
ReplyDeleteOh my. I do so envy you...so at what price are they available? Hubby will be going B'lore soon and I can work on him.
ReplyDeleteI can't find *any* here. :(

ReplyDeleteBrave man.
ReplyDeleteI have read nothing by Neil Gaiman, even though some of his books are yet to be unpacked.
