Did anyone notice the very visible boom mike in The Village? I've seen a few movies where the mike is quite visible, but it was very bad in this one, though! Almost every scene in the first half had the mike hanging from top.
I liked the film, however. Passable.
Yep. Sometimes it was just way too obvious.. and I still cannot understand the shot made it into the final film.
ReplyDeleteI went with low expectations and came out pretty happy. The movie is zillion times better then the signs
oh no..now i'll have to endure the movie again to spot this one...
ReplyDeleteMaybe because of this?

"So movie directors and cinematographers compensate by continuing to shoot most movies in 1.33:1 but composing scenes so that the important stuff will fit in a 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 frame when projected. (Lines scribed on the camera viewfinder aid in this.) This process has gotten so casual that studios sometimes release finished films with boom microphones, cables, etc., visible at the top and bottom of some scenes, confident that the theaters will cut the crap when they project. "
Oh, that's good to know. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIs it a pattern in Shyamalan's movies? The boom mike was clearly visible in the scene in The Sixth Sense when Osment hides under the blanket in his room.
ReplyDeleteShyamalan's been booming too much i think!
ReplyDelete>hic<
Yeah, it freaked me out a bit when I first read it. So much for "each scene carefully composed like an oil painting"!
ReplyDeletethis is interesting stuff indeed. But I can tell you that theatres son't have much of control other than the aspect ratio while projecting the movie. So the studios are sometime plain lazy. We had an instance when of the 14 reels of a movie, the studio sent only 13 and believe it or not we played 3 shows of the movie without any customer battling an eyelid :)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to post this link and excerpt in an earlier thread on LJ where this was discussed, but didn't. And I was going to do just that here, but you saved me the trouble. This makes me very happy. Boy, am I looking forward to this vacation!
ReplyDeleteIf the practice of 'widescreening' at the theatres doesn't exist in India then its possible that we are seeing more than what the film makers intended, atleast for some movies. Anyway its just laziness to send out prints with unwanted bits showing at the top and bottom.
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't miss a reel or two from a typical Bollywood movie. And some of the new Hollywood ones the sequence in which they are shown doesn't matter.
i think that is a part of his special effects or to take your eyes of another boring cliched secne in the film.
ReplyDeleteHa. Glad to help. Can't wait for the vacation either. mmm.. Chippy (not Maathu) fry...
ReplyDeleteNot sure if anyone else noticed... but there was a mike hanging around even in the Sixth Sense. I think it was the classroom scene where he says the school was used to hang people. I'm wasn't sure then if it was intentional, now i think it is!
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the film and was quite vehement about it!
ReplyDeleteOk.
ReplyDeleteHeheheh that was funny. Just an abrupt Ok.
ReplyDeleteAnd that was a fast response.
ReplyDeleteI'm bored and am going through LJ for the lack of anything better to do. I shall not bore you though so this is my last msg to you. Btw, how is the new house doing or rather how are you'll doing in the new house?
ReplyDeleteThe new house is tolerating us quite well. And vice versa. Thanks for asking!
ReplyDeleteHow are things in the wonderful world of widescreen multiplexes?
We lack width...it ain't that much of a widescreen since the boom mikes were visible. The wait for the launch of the plex in B'bay is equivalent to WAITING FOR GODOT.
ReplyDeleteAnd Bangalore?
ReplyDeleteB'lore will happen only by next year!
ReplyDeletewear helmets and kevlar vest's when you launch it here. the locals are going on a rampage trying to stop other language movies being shown here. they went and smashed up a multiplex showing Bride & P ,but it might have also been it was the audience demanding their money back:)
ReplyDeleteheheheh heard about that!
