pure sciences - namely physics, maths, chemistry (among others) are quite necessary and no spiritual mumbo jumbo should really come in way of education there. however, physics theories have come a long way from the classical newtonian world of complete predictability. modern physics (quantum, subatomics) is baffling to to say the least - so much so that a belief in the spiritual scheme of things followed logically for most physicists like schrodinger, einstein and many others.more information in books like "The dancing wu-li masters" (author i dont remember) and "the tao of physics" by fritjof capara.(must reads for rationalists I say:) )
While a formal education in pure sciences and free thinking is essential for every child that wants to hold its own in the world, extreme rationality normally translates to agnosticism , which is nothing wrong but is really the outcome of a scientific mind that classifies anything outside or unexplainable by theory as improbable.
For every Capra/Zukav is a Steinger. Both theorize, both propose and dispose. I guess both of them are talking about beliefs/opinions here which are being rationalized.
Lest I may sound too mystic to you, I feel spirituality or "realization" as it is called is an experience where words/theories would be found wanting. The link tells me everything within the realms of the human mind and communication will be far from what true experience can give.
no i have not read any of these..honestly, you or I cannot judge anything as delusion or certified experiences.
Everyone has a belief they wish to rationalize. Maybe that is why I quoted a Capra and you quote a Steinger. Both of us have not experienced(if I may assume that about you as well - wait a minute - agnosticism can never be an experience)
Funny how a kid assumes x exists in algebra and goes about finding the value of x. On a larger scale, faith is no different from algebra. Maybe a few more lifetimes and that might be clear too!
That is an excellent article. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeletenice link :)..

The Dancing Wu-Li Masters was by Gary Zukav. Excellent book.

ReplyDeleteEh? You can't see responses? I think about 7-8 folks have responded. Didn't you get the email responses?
ReplyDeleteYou should be able to see the responses as screened comments on the site, if you are logged in. Let me know if that also doesn't work.
OK, now I get it. This is what happens when you check your mail this often. Here's the link: http://www.csicop.org/si/9701/quantum-quackery.html

ReplyDeleteYes, Zukav.

Yes, and delusions are bona fide experiences too. Read any Vilayanur Ramachandran/Oliver Sacks?
